UK WOMEN IN MOTORCYCLE SPORT

We encourage and support women in grass roots motorcycle sport

The club was set up in 2023 to provide information about all motorcycle sport disciplines in the UK. Our factsheets are written with female motorcycle racers and competitors in mind, particularly the off road disciplines which are less well known. We held our first event in 2024 where women and girls could try all types of off road motorcycling.

So what are the sports?

Road Racing

In the UK racing on circuits with a tarmac surface is known as road racing. The Federation de Motocyclisme Internationale, created the Womens Circuit Racing Championship in 2024, with Ana Carasco as the inaugural World Champion. True road racing takes place on closed public roads, such as the Isle of Man TT and Classic GP course. All UK road racing is run under ACU rules. Go to our Road Race page. Trials

Trials are a competition of skill for solos and sidecars. Although there may be an overall time limit, no speed element is contained within the competition. Trials is the most popular of all motorcycle sports and is almost certainly taking place near you. It is quiet and does not advertise for spectators except for major events. Long distance trials are a specific type of trial using public roads. Go to our Trials page. Download the information sheet.

Enduro

Enduro is a time trial, with riders required to complete a course within a certain time, and within the course, there are two or three special tests. Riders need to be on time, not early or late, and the result is decided on the times of the special tests of the riders who are on time. A small number of events include riding on public roads and these must be organised by the ACU. As well as traditional time card enduros, there are Trail Bike Rallies, hare and hounds, sprint enduros, with three ACU championships: the British Classic Enduro, the British Extreme Enduro and the British Bike Rally Championship (for adventure bikes, not British bikes!)

Motocross

Motocross is the most well known offroad racing discipline. Modern motocross tracks include jumps and “table tops” and are usually about a mile, often on a hillside. Races are usually 15 minutes plus a lap. Classic motocross races usually runs on circuits without man made jumps, just natural up and downs of the land. Youth and adults compete in motocross, and both the ACU and the AMCA have ladies championships for solo riders. ACU, AMCA and NORA clubs run motocross meetings. The sidecars are known as sidecarcross, and although rare, women are both drivers and passengers.

Supermoto is a mix of motocross and roadracing, and is the motorcycle equivalent of rallycross.

Grass Track

Grass track is probably the least well known offroad racing, and, in the adult classes, the fastest! In the UK there are four sidecar classes, six adult solo classes, seven youth classes and a quad class. It is held on a large flat field, and is a spectator sport. Camping is usually available, and two day meetings have different classes each day – usually the support classes on Saturday with the main ones on Sunday. Most circuits are erected for the event and then dismantled, but a few clubs have permanent boarded circuits. Specialist motorcycles are needed for most classes, although some youth racing is on motocross bikes.

Flat-track is similar to grass track run on speedway or dirt surfaced ovals. Machines are usually based on road motorcycles with a few modifications, solos only.
